What the Button Mapping Test does
Custom firmware, Steam Input remaps, and vendor software can all rewrite which physical button reports which logical index. This test shows the exact index the browser receives so you can confirm a remap or macro fires the input you intended. Every pressed button lights up on a live map with its index number.
How to run the test
- Load the page with your remap or macro layer active.
- Press one button at a time.
- Confirm the highlighted index matches the mapping you set. For example, Xbox A should be index 0 under standard mapping.
- Test each remapped combination end to end before saving your profile.
Why button mapping trips people up
Modern controllers do not send physical inputs. They send indices that games interpret. Xbox A is index 0 under the W3C standard mapping, PlayStation Cross is also index 0, and Switch B is also index 0 because Nintendo's B sits in the same position as Xbox A. When you remap a paddle to jump, you are telling the controller to fire index 0 when the paddle is pressed. This tester exposes what the browser sees so you can verify the wiring is what you expect.
How to diagnose a broken remap
Set up your remap in the vendor software (Xbox Accessories app, DualSense Edge Settings, GameSir Nexus, 8BitDo Ultimate Software, or Steam Input). Save the profile to the controller. Load this test with no software translation layer active. Press the remapped button. If the index that lights up is the one you assigned, the remap works and the game itself is doing something else with the input. If a different index lights up, the profile did not save correctly.
Standard mapping is not universal
Most modern controllers report as standard mapping under Chrome and Edge. Older HID pads, arcade sticks, and some racing wheels report non-standard. In non-standard mode the button indices are whatever the manufacturer assigned. Games have to be aware of that layout. If your pad reads non-standard here, try updating firmware or reconnecting on a different transport before assuming a game will not support it.
Stuck buttons and ghost inputs
This test also catches stuck buttons. If an index stays lit when nothing is pressed, that switch is either mechanically stuck, has a shorted trace, or is misreported by firmware. Ghost inputs (an index flashing on when you press a different button) usually mean a physical short inside the controller, often from a spilled drink. Both usually need hardware repair.
Test your paddles and macros before ranked
There is nothing worse than losing a match because your macro fired the wrong ability. Run every macro through this tester before it matters. Confirm each paddle fires the exact index you assigned, confirm no double-fire from a stuck contact, and confirm that combos (macros) fire in the right order by watching the index sequence in real time.
