What the Stick Drift Test does

Stick drift is when an analog stick reports movement while your thumb is nowhere near it. This tool plots both sticks in real time, measures the resting offset in raw units, and grades each stick against the same thresholds repair shops use: safe under 0.05, minor between 0.05 and 0.15, and replace above 0.15.

How to run the test

  1. Rest the controller flat on a table and take both thumbs off the sticks.
  2. Wait 3 to 5 seconds while the tester averages the resting values.
  3. Read the plotted dot on each pad. It should sit inside the dashed dead-zone circle.
  4. If a dot drifts, note the direction. A stuck X or Y axis usually points to a failing sensor on that axis.
  5. Compare left and right stick, then re-run after cleaning around the stick base with compressed air.

What stick drift actually is

Every traditional analog stick sits on two tiny potentiometers, one for the X axis and one for the Y axis. As you push the stick, the wiper on each potentiometer slides along a resistive track, and the controller reads that voltage as a number between -1 and 1. Over time the track wears, dust gets in, or the return spring loses tension. The result is that the wiper does not sit exactly at electrical center when your thumb is off the stick, and the game reads that offset as movement. That is drift.

How to read the numbers this tool shows you

The tester samples the raw axis values dozens of times per second and averages them. A perfect stick reads 0.00, 0.00. Any real controller reads something like 0.01, -0.02 which is well within safe range. Values between 0.05 and 0.15 mean the sensor is worn enough that some games will register phantom input. Anything above 0.15 will visibly move your character or camera, and it is time to plan a fix. Note which axis is off, X or Y. A single-axis drift usually means one worn potentiometer that a repair shop can swap without replacing the whole module.

Quick fixes before you replace anything

Blow compressed air around the base of the stick with the controller powered on and rotate the stick through its full range while doing it. This dislodges dust that has settled under the plastic collar. On PlayStation, recalibrate the sticks via the on-board firmware using our PS Controller Calibration tool. On Xbox, update firmware through the Xbox Accessories app. On Switch Pro and Joy-Con, run the calibration flow from System Settings. These steps solve a surprising number of complaints that look like drift but are really uncalibrated centering.

When to replace the stick module

If drift is above 0.15, if it comes back within a week of cleaning, or if the deviation grows the longer you play, the potentiometer is physically worn and no software fix will save it. Stick modules cost 2 to 6 USD and swap in 20 to 40 minutes with basic tools. For Joy-Cons, Nintendo repairs drift free of charge in many regions, so try that first. For Xbox and PlayStation controllers under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening the case.

Why hall-effect and TMR sticks matter

Hall-effect and TMR sticks read a magnetic field rather than physical contact, so there is nothing to wear down. Third-party pads like the 8BitDo Ultimate 2, GameSir Cyclone, and most current-gen fight sticks use hall sticks specifically to avoid drift. If you have replaced a controller more than once for drift, spending an extra 15 USD on a hall-effect model saves money long term. Common problems and quick fixes

Character walks by itself in one direction
That is left stick drift on the X or Y axis. Increase the in-game dead-zone to 0.15, then run this test. If drift is above 0.15, plan a hardware fix.
Camera aim slowly rotates while idle
Right stick drift. Same fix as above. In shooters, raise the aim dead-zone in the game's controller settings.
Only drifts after warming up
Thermal expansion inside a worn potentiometer. Replace the stick module or swap to a hall-effect controller.
Drift only appears in one game
That game's dead-zone is set lower than others. Adjust the game's controller sensitivity or dead-zone slider.
