What the Switch Pro Controller Test does
The Switch Pro controller uses Nintendo's ABXY layout (B and A swapped versus Xbox) and reports ZL and ZR as digital triggers, not analog. This tester displays each button under its Nintendo label so what you press physically matches what the screen shows.
How to run the test
- Pair the Switch Pro to your PC over Bluetooth or plug it in via USB-C.
- Press any button to wake the API.
- Verify each button: A, B, X, Y, L, R, ZL, ZR, minus, plus, home, capture, and both sticks click.
- Rotate each stick in a full circle and watch for a clean trace without dead spots.
Nintendo layout and why B feels wrong on other systems
Nintendo places B at the bottom and A on the right, the opposite of Xbox. This tester shows the Nintendo layout so what you press is what you see. If you play cross-platform, this is why controller prompts feel swapped: your muscle memory learned one system and the on-screen icons are for the other. This test does not change the underlying indices, just the labels.
Why triggers are digital
Nintendo chose to make ZL and ZR full-press digital switches to keep costs down and to simplify the shell. Racing games on Switch that need analog braking either use a stick axis or accept the on-off input. In this tester you will see ZL and ZR flip cleanly between idle and pressed rather than sweeping like PS or Xbox triggers.
Pairing on PC, Mac, and Android
The Switch Pro pairs as a standard Bluetooth HID device on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 11+, Android 10+, and iPadOS 16.4+. Chrome and Edge see it under the standard mapping. Firefox often reads it as non-standard, which means some button labels here may not match your press. If that happens, switch browsers.
HD Rumble in the browser
HD Rumble is Nintendo's high-resolution haptic system based on a voice coil actuator instead of eccentric weights. Games can send waveforms that produce ice cubes clinking or a marble rolling around inside the controller. The browser vibrationActuator API can drive the same actuators, but only with a basic dual-motor style effect, not the full waveform. So this tester's vibration confirms the actuator works. It does not showcase HD Rumble at its best.
Common Switch Pro issues and fixes
The most common fault is stick drift, especially on the left stick. Run our Stick Drift Test on both sticks. The second most common is that the pad refuses to connect after being paired with a Switch console. Fix by holding the small pair button on the top edge for 5 seconds until the LEDs flash, then pair again. The third is dead vibration, which usually means the internal ribbon cable to the actuator has come loose and needs service.
