What the Xbox Controller Test does
This tester renders every Xbox Wireless Controller input under its official label. Face buttons follow Xbox ABXY, triggers report analog 0 to 100 percent travel, and the D-pad shows each cardinal cleanly. Hybrid D-pads sometimes ghost diagonals when worn, and this tester surfaces that immediately.
How to run the test
- Connect via USB-C cable, Xbox Wireless dongle, or Bluetooth.
- Press any button once to wake the API.
- Test each face button, both bumpers, both triggers to full pull, both stick clicks, view, menu, and the Xbox guide button.
- Rock the D-pad through all 8 directions to catch a ghosted diagonal.
- Move both sticks in full circles and verify the on-screen dot follows without dead spots.
Which Xbox controllers this covers
Every Xbox Wireless Controller from the Xbox One era through the current Series X and S pads speaks the same USB HID protocol and the same Xbox Wireless radio protocol. That means this tester works identically for the original Xbox One controller (Model 1537, 1697, 1708), the Series controller (Model 1914), and the Elite Series 2 (Model 1797). Third-party Xbox-licensed pads from PowerA, Turtle Beach, PDP, and Thrustmaster also report as standard mapping under Chromium.
Xbox ABXY layout explained
Xbox uses A at the bottom, B on the right, X on the left, Y on top. This differs from Switch which swaps A and B. When a game or tester shows the wrong label for what feels like the right position, that is why. This tester always uses Xbox labels for Xbox controllers, so what you press physically matches what the screen shows.
The hybrid D-pad and its ghost inputs
The Series controller uses a hybrid D-pad: a single dish that can register cardinals and diagonals cleanly on a fresh pad. As the internal contacts wear, the dish starts to ghost. You press up and the tester shows up-right. You press left and it shows down-left. This is a known aging pattern for Xbox pads. If you see it on this test, the D-pad membrane is worn and needs replacement.
Analog trigger travel is unique to Xbox family
PlayStation triggers report 0 to 100 percent, same as Xbox. Switch Pro triggers are digital only. That means if you squeeze L2 or R2 on a DualSense and see a smooth 0 to 100 sweep here, that is normal. Squeeze ZL or ZR on a Switch Pro and the tester will just flick to pressed. Xbox triggers are the most consistent for racing games because both trigger travel and trigger threshold are exposed to games and the browser identically.
How to get the best performance from an Xbox pad
Update firmware through the Xbox Accessories app on Windows or Xbox console before troubleshooting. Use the Xbox Wireless dongle for lowest latency on PC. If you must use Bluetooth, keep other 2.4 GHz devices away. Charge the pad fully because low battery is the top cause of random disconnects.
